Part 1: Sully for President (2012)
Sully For America is a series of satirical political campaign commercial parodies, accompanied by online and social media narratives. Born and raised in Massachusetts, John Fitzgerald O’Sullivan, a.k.a “Sully”, is a man of the people fed up with the status quo in Washington. To solve the problems with the system, he ran for president in 2012…unsuccessfully. Then in 2013, he ran for US Senate…unsuccessfully. In 2014, he put his name in the running for Governor of Massachusetts…unsuccessfully. After fleeing to Mexico following the Massachusetts gubernatorial election, he made his auspicious return, trying his luck once again at achieving the highest office in the land. With the resolve of a Bruin’s goalie, Sully soldiers on as the true Everyman candidate, forever fighting (for) average Americans from the South Shore to the North Shore.
Artist’s note: Sully was inspired by the pandering campaign ads of populist candidates like Scott Brown, who use props like pickup trucks and hardhats to convey their groundedness. The videos seek to call attention to those tactics with an over-the-top satirical character, desperate to display his Average Joe qualities like the other candidates on TV. The catch is that Sully is actually a “regular guy”, oblivious to the actual requirements necessary to run for office.
